Updated to the 2025 regulations
Obtain a Residence Permit in Spain if you are from Europe
For citizens of the European Union (EU), the process of obtaining a residence permit in Spain is relatively simple. Here are the key steps:
Registration at the Foreigners' Office: As a citizen of the EU, you must register at the Foreigners' Office within the first three months of your arrival in Spain. This procedure, which since 2025 also requires being registered in your municipality of residence, will provide you with a certificate of registration as a community resident.
Demonstrate financial sufficiency: Although it is not necessary to have a job in Spain, you must demonstrate that you have enough resources to support yourself and your family.
Health insurance: You must have public or private health insurance that covers you in Spain. If you choose a private one, it must be copayment-free and provide full coverage.
Obtaining the Foreigner Identification Number (NIE): The NIE is a tax identification number necessary to carry out legal procedures in Spain.
Obtain a Residence Permit in Spain if you are from Outside Europe
For non-EU citizens, the process is more detailed. Here are the fundamental steps:
Residence Visa: You must apply for a residence visa at the Spanish consulate in your country of origin before arriving in Spain. Since April 2025, the well-known 'Golden Visa' is no longer available, so one of the main options is the non-profit residence visa.
Entry into Spain: Once you obtain your visa, you can enter Spain and apply for a residence permit at the Foreigners' Office.
Demonstrate financial means: You must demonstrate that you have the necessary financial resources to support yourself during your stay in Spain. In the case of the non-profit visa, a minimum equivalent to 400% of the current monthly IPREM is required.
Health Insurance: Like EU citizens, you must have public or private health insurance. In this case, the insurance must be copayment-free and provide full coverage in Spanish territory.
NIE (Foreigner Identification Number): You will also need to obtain an NIE.
